In Key Stage 3 students are taught to:

  • Read and interpret staff notation accurately in a range of musical styles, genres and
    traditions
  • Identify various types of Western music and composers through a study of Music
    History
  • Develop the skills required for performance in a range of solo and ensemble contexts
    through voice or musical instruments
    In Key Stage 4 they will:
  • Improve on performance skills learned in Key Stage 3
  • Develop a deeper understanding of the music that they perform and to which they
    listen, as well as its history
  • Compose, extend and develop musical ideas by drawing on a range of musical
    structures, styles, genres and traditions
  • Identify and use the inter-related dimensions of music expressively and with
    increasing sophistication, including use of tonalities, different types of scales and
    other musical devices
    Assessment opportunities comprise:
  • Composing tasks
  • Regular performances
  • Listening tasks
  • An End of Year exam
