The Duke of Edinburgh International Award [DofE] programme is thriving at The Regent Secondary School.  We have a devoted team of staff working to support increasing numbers every year in both the Bronze and Silver cohorts.  Despite its short history, it has become a very exciting and popular activity choice for KS4 students.

Regent students can begin their Bronze programme when they are 14, this is a DofE requirement.  All students that complete Bronze are then eligible to begin their Silver programme when they are 15.  Many students go on to their next schools abroad to register and complete the Gold programme.

We are delighted that in the past two years we have been able to become an Independent Award Centre, bring First Aid Training in-house and become our own charity.  Exciting changes seem to be happening every year as the dynamic programme adapts to the needs of our students and circumstances.

DofE is so much more than just choosing one activity.  Each candidate tailors the programme to suit their interests and needs within the parameters set out by the International Award requirements.  Bronze and Silver candidates are expected to devote themselves to a number differing challenges.  These include the following:

FIRST AID

Bronze students attend a 6 hour training session and become certified in Emergency First Aid. Their certificate is valid for 3 years and acts as preparation for their Adventurous Journey and also is a qualification in its own right separate from the DofE qualification.

SKILLS

‘The Skills section provides the opportunity for a participant to either improve on an existing skill, or to try something new. As with the other Sections of the Award, a level of commitment is required over time to progress a skill. It leads to a sense of achievement and well-being, and possibly improved employability through the development of life and vocational skills.’ intaward.org

The Regent Secondary School offers a great number of Skill based activities in our Co-Curricular Activity programme. The amount of time spent on this skill will depend on the level of Award they are working toward as well as how they decide to tailor the programme to suit their needs.

PHYSICAL RECREATION

Encouraging healthy behaviours has benefits, not only for participants but also for their communities, whether through improved health, or active participation in team activities. This Section specifically aims to improve the health, team skills, self-esteem and confidence of participants.’ intaward.org

The Regent Secondary School offers a great number of Physical Recreation based activities in our Co-Curricular Activity programme. Again,the amount of time spent on this sport will depend on the level of Award they are working toward as well as how they decide to tailor the programme to suit their needs.

SERVICE

‘Participants are required to give service (volunteer) over a set period of time that enables them to experience the benefits that their service provides to others.’ intaward.org

All Bronze and Silver students participate in annual fundraising ventures that are fun for the entire school community. Some of these include The 24 Hour Famine, Bonfire Night and Mufti/Cupcake Day.

We are more grateful to parents of all Regent students that support our ventures and donate both time and money to ensure the success of each event. More specifically, The Friends of Regent continue to assist in any way they can and their participation is integral to the triumphs we regularly experience as the events become bigger and better over time.

Once the funds are raised, our groups are devoted to seeing that money put to good use with projects in local schools and with other people in need in the wider Abuja community.

Beyond fundraising and making donations, our students donate their time. Teaching literacy and numeracy, holding sports’ day activities, painting and building shelves etc.

ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY

‘The journey can be an exploration or an expedition but must be a challenge. The aim of this Section is to provide participants with the opportunity to learn more about the wider environment, as well as to develop their self-confidence, team work and health. Participants are taken out of their comfort zone but kept within a safe and secure setting, achieved through suitable training and supervision.’ intaward.org

Some consider the Adventurous Journey portion of the programme to be the reward for all of the hard work throughout the year. Once the candidates reach their destination, however, they find that there is more hard work to be faced. While on expedition, our students learn a great deal about themselves. They are taken out of their comfort zones and end up participating in activities they find both challenging and rewarding.

It is amazing to see the transformation DofE candidates experience throughout their time in the programme. They develop leadership skills, build character and learn about themselves and their peers.
