PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The Physical Education Syllabus provides candidates with an opportunity to study both the practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. It is designed to promote enjoyment in physical activity and the knowledge gained should enable students to develop an understanding of effective and safe physical performance. Throughout the course students should be encouraged to improve their ability to plan, perform, analyse and evaluate physical activities. Their knowledge, skills and understanding of a number of physical activities selected from a wide range of categories should develop throughout the course.

Units covered include:

Factors affecting performance

  • Health issues
  • Safety and training
  • Reasons and opportunities for participation in physical activity

The coursework assesses a candidate’s physical performance, including an ability to interrelate planning, performing and evaluating whilst undertaking activity and the ability to analyse and improve their own and others. Performances in four practical activities are worth 50% of the syllabus total, while analysis report covers 10%.

The four practical activities must be chosen from a minimum of two of the six categories outlined:

  • Games
  • Gymnastic Activities
  • Dance
  • Athletic Activities
  • Swimming
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
